Pregnant & Parenting scholarship empowers Louisville mothers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Right to Life of Louisville is financially supporting four young mothers as they pursue higher education this year through the Pregnant & Parenting Scholarship program.

“The pregnancy and parenting scholarship is an opportunity for women who are students to receive a scholarship or a financial contribution toward their tuition wherever they’re studying,” said Margaret Schay, the new Right to Life of Louisville executive director. That includes both Louisville-area higher education institutions and recognized trade programs.

Schay added the scholarship is a tangible example of her nonprofit’s serious commitment to protecting human life.

“We also understand that there are tremendous demands on moms, especially single moms. And we don’t want there to be unnecessary burdens. If there’s a burden that we can assist in relieving, to any extent, we want to be supportive of that,” Schay explained.

The scholarship program was created in 2022 through a partnership with the Students for Life chapter at the University of Louisville; the first funds were awarded in the spring of 2023. This year, the four women who each received a $1,000 scholarship were either pregnant or had children under the age of two.

The Pregnant & Parenting Scholarship is funded by private donors and Right to Life of Louisville’s various fundraising events. At the spring gala, attendees can donate directly to the scholarship. Right to Life of Louisville also allocates a percentage of overall funds raised to the program after estimating the number of women they would like to support.

“Our goal is to make sure that we can support more women and increase funding for that as well, so that we can help give even more to (scholarship recipients),” Schay said.

Schay said she wants pregnant or parenting students to know that Right to Life of Louisville is in their corner.

“We do understand the tremendous difficulties that women today face when they are experiencing a difficult or unplanned pregnancy. And we want to help alleviate some of those burdens that they are experiencing so that they can have a little bit of a space to breathe and to be there for their child or to pursue adoption, whichever path they choose. And we’re here for them.”
