October another month without abortions to report in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – There were no abortions reported to Kentucky’s Cabinet of Health and Family Services for October 2023.

In an email to Kentucky Today, a representative for the Cabinet noted that there were no records to fulfill an Open Records request submitted in November, stating: “After a diligent search, the Cabinet determined that it possesses no records responsive to your above request. The Cabinet cannot furnish records that do not exist.”

Under Kentucky law, abortions must be reported to the Office of Vital Statistics within three days of the end of the month in which the abortion occurred.

October is the fifth month this year to yield zero abortions, following February, June, July and September; it is also the eighth month without abortions reported to the Cabinet since Kentucky’s trigger abortion ban was enforced on August 1, 2022.

The total of reported abortions in the state remains at 13 heading into the final two months of 2023. In the last quarter of 2022, only two abortions were reported in Kentucky, both of which occurred in October.

All data related to abortions provided in Kentucky are made available to the public through the Open Records Act.
