Wow factor: Haven Care Center expanding up and out for God’s glory

DANVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Haven Care Center keeps a “wow” book where they record all of the amazing things God is doing through their ministry, and executive director Tiffany Johnson says they simply can’t keep up with the goodness of the Lord.

“Every day around here…it’s like seeing the Red Sea part,” Johnson said. “It’s like ‘Wow!’ after ‘Wow!'”

An expansion on the Danville office building, which used to be a bar, was a part of the pregnancy resource center’s vision because the ministry is rapidly growing. But a $120,000 donation from two donors will make an STI clinic, second ultrasound room and peer counseling spaces a reality.

Johnson said the two-story, 1,000-square-foot frame, which recently gained a roof, is covered in scripture written by staff, volunteers and board members.

“We’re all about the foundation, building on Him. We know He’s the rock,” she said. “It is completely consecrated in His word on these boards throughout this whole building.”

Haven Care Center also opened a satellite office in nearby Stanford in mid-August — a strategic effort to go to the women and families who needed their services but couldn’t reliably travel to Danville.

“We’ve got to go where the need is, and it’s a mission field right in our back yard,” Johnson said.

The Stanford office is set up in the community room at the Lincoln County Housing Authority, and offers peer counseling and access to Haven Care’s baby boutique. On the first day, four families were served at the new location.

“It is going to be a beacon of light for His glory,” Johnson said.

Transitional housing is another avenue of service Haven Care is providing in Boyle County.

A donated storage building has been converted to a two-bed, two-bath residence for mothers facing an unplanned or crisis pregnancy. The three-month program provides free housing for the first month and requires families to pay half of the utilities and find a job during the second month as residents save for a down payment on their own place before moving out during month three.

“By then they should have a job, they should be self-sufficient, they should have the resources they need,” Johnson explained.

Haven Care Center had a goal to help four families a year but were able to serve seven “because our families were able to get back on their feet quicker than expected and get stability and be independent,” Johnson added.

Since the transitional home’s opening in 2020, 17 families have been helped.

And an expansion into Lincoln County is already approved. The transitional apartment even has furniture donated and stowed away in storage, waiting to be used.

“We already have everything for a family (ready) to go,” Johnson said. “We’re just waiting on the keys to that.”

With all of the big developments and seemingly smaller “wow” moments—from a car showing up on the doorstep to meet a need, to more staff needing to be hired, to increasing involvement from local churches—Johnson said God is providing for specific needs and Haven Care Center wants to be obedient to Him.

“It’s not about us and we just want to bring Him such honor, such glory,” she said, adding that it is a “precious gift” to be involved with the ministry happening in Boyle and Lincoln counties.

“We’re just wowed all the time around here. I can’t wait to share with you what God is going to do in the next three years.”
