‘The Haven’ maternity home celebrates one year of service in Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (KT) – Clarity Solutions for Women, a pregnancy resource center and clinic in Hardin County, once had a dream to provide shelter for pregnant women facing housing instability — a looming issue in the lives of their clients. The realization of that dream, The Haven at Clarity, celebrated one year of maternity housing ministry this summer.

“God has done so many exciting things here in the past year and we are so grateful,” said Dana Caudill, Clarity Solutions’ director of client services.

In that year, The Haven provided 240 nights of shelter to four residents, welcomed two babies (with two more due in October 2023), supported one resident through her GED graduation and celebrated two salvations.

“The Haven residents become a part of our Aspire (motherhood) program which lasts until their baby turns 18 months old, and includes prenatal, postpartum, life skills and toddler classes,” added Laurie Souleyrette, Clarity’s interim CEO. “Additionally, our mentoring component provides an older, wiser mom to walk alongside our clients, to befriend them and help them understand how to have a relationship with Jesus.”

Each resident works with The Haven staff and a case manager to set goals and make a plan to reach them so that she can exit the program prepared to live independently and provide for herself and her child. These goals and steps toward reaching them have included obtaining a driver’s license, registering for college, celebrating a year of sobriety and attending job training classes.

“The Haven is not only impacting the lives of the pregnant ladies who come to us for help, but also dramatically impacting the lives of their babies, who are born into safety and love, which continues to ripple throughout the generations to come,” Caudill said. “By changing the direction of one momma’s life, we change countless other lives as well.”

Daryl and Sheila Mullins, who serve as resident house managers at The Haven, said that ministering to women at the maternity home has changed their lives.

“It’s not just a job; it’s our life. We are very grateful that God has brought us here in this season,” said Daryl, who pastored a Kentucky Baptist Church in northern Kentucky for over two decades before coming to The Haven.

“There are so many ways God has been so good to us,” Sheila said. “Seeing these ladies accept the Lord, get baptized, tell you they love you and that they are so thankful to be here is such a blessing. I could go on and on.”

The Mullins provide spiritual guidance through Bible study, discipleship and mentorship, transportation and hands-on life skills training to the women in their care, and those faithful day-to day, week-to-week ministries have had an impact.

“I feel like I’ve grown so much since I’ve been here,” said Amanda*, a resident of The Haven. “In my recovery, in relationships, overall as a person, especially in coming to Christ, which is what I’m most excited and happy about.”

“I love it here,” added Hannah*, another resident. “I have accomplished so much with your support and am learning so much about God. I love it here, I just love it here! This is definitely God-given. I don’t want to leave; I call this place home.”

Clarity Solutions and The Haven are donor-funded, and ministry would not be possible at the maternity home without the support of Elizabethtown residents, businesses and churches.

“It is a substantial amount of money that we would have absolutely no way to cover without the support of our community,” Caudill said. “This is a God-sized mission, and it is beautiful to see how He has provided through the incredibly generosity of our supporters and church partners.”
